February 26, 2019

  • All athletes interested in trying out for JV or Varsity softball should attend a Softball Meeting during Mustang Tme on Wed., 2/27 in Room 258.  See Mr. Parson if you are unable to attend.
  • Students interested in participating in Outdoor Track are asked to meet with Mr. Dubbs in room 328 during break on Wed, 2/27.  Reminder that all forms must be turned in online by Thursday, 2/28.
  • The Young Democrats will meet in the media center on Wed., 2/27 after school.  All are welcome!
  • There are still a few days remaining to donate shampoo and conditioner to support Veterans.  Look for the Red Cross Club collection boxes around the school and in room 311.  We are participating in a region wide competition among other Red Cross Chapters.....Let's Go Mustangs!!
  • Congratulations to the newly inducted members of the Spanish National Honor Society.  This is a reminder that our first meeting is Wed., 2/27 during Mustang Time in Room 322...this is for new members only!
  • Have you ever thought about teaching as a career? Did yu now that several area colleges offer scholarships to students who major in education?  On March 7 from 3-6 pm, Educators Rising is holding a countywide event at Marriotts Ridge HS.  All students are welcome to join us for an evening of information and fun activities. there will be a college fair, professional workshops and studetns who are currently majoring in education to answer your questions.  Ask Ms. Burke in room 352 how you can sign up to attend this free event.

  • Black History Month: Inventor and engineer Lewis Latimer was born in Chelsea, MA on September 4, 1848. He collaborated with science greats Hiram Maxim and Thomas Edison.  One of Latimer's greatest inventions was the carbon filament, a vital component of the light bulb.  His inventions didn't stop there working with Alexandr Graham Bell, latimer helped draft the patent for Bell's design of the telephone.  This genius also designed an improved railroad car bathroom and an early air conditioning unit.  So the next time you're escaping a hot day inside your cool house, don't forget to thank Lewis Latimer.
  • Congrats to Danielle Bacon for being selecting for The President's Volunteer Service Award.  Way to go Danielle!!
  • Congratulations to Hanna Al-Kowsi for being named a semi-fonalist for the Cooke College Scholarship. She was chosen fro 6,200 applicants from across the United States.

  • Black History Month: First Lawyer, John Mercer Langston was the first black man to become a lawyer when he passed the bar in Ohio in 1854.  When he was electeed to the post f Town Clerk for Brownhelm, Ohio in 1855, Langston became on of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America.  He was also the great uncle of Langston Hughes, fames poet of the Harlem Renaissance.
  • MRHS Multicultural Night, hosted by Bollywood and MAAAC Clubs, will be held March 1 from 5:30-7pm in the cafeteria. There will be lots of food and many activities, including performances and henna tattoos.  Advance tickets are $3 available during lunches on Feb. 28 and Mar. 1.  At the door tickets will be $4/students and $5/adults.  Hope to see everybody there!
  • Congrats to the Girls Basketball Programs on their win over Oaklman Mills last night.  Varsity knocked off the #1 team in the County!  The team was lead by Emma Morath with 21 pts and Mallory Conroy with 10 pts.
  • Students who entered PTSA Reflections may stop by the front office to pick up their recognitions and submissions.

  • Your Mustang Ice Hockey team has advanced to the Serio Cup for the 3rd year in a row! Come out and support them tonight at 8PM as they take on Glenelg at the Columbia Ice Rink.  Admission fee applies.
  • The Red Cross Club will be collecting shampoo and conditioner bottles throughout the month of February for local vetyerans in need.  Please bring your donations to Mrs. Bonner's room 311 beginning Febrary 4-22.  Collection boxes are also located throughout the building.
  • The MRHS Vision Club is having a fundraiser night at Chipotle on SUNDAY, 2/10 from 4-8 p.m.  It is a great opportunity to help the community and get deliious food, All the proceeds raised will go towards sponsoring cataract surgeries for kids in need in developing countries.  Make sure to tell the cashier you want to support MRHS Vision Club.  Please share with your families and friends.

  • In honor of Black History Month:  Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was the first Aftrican Amerian ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967 and served until 1991.
  • Congratulations to POMS for placing 1st for Captain and 3rd for team in their competition last weekend!
  • Boys' Soccer, there will be a 2019 interest meeting during break next Wednesday, 2/13, in Mr. Khouri's room 353.
  • Show your love and appreciation for everyone you care about!  Buy a rose during all lunch shifts from the Relay for Life Club.  All roses will be delivered on Valentine's Day.  Roses are $2 each and are on sale now through Feb. 13.  All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

  • In honor of Black History Month: Did You Know -- Patricia Bath is a contemporary inventor and ophthalmologist fro Harlem, New York.  She is the first black female dotor to receive a medical patent.  In 1986, she invented the Laserphaco Probe which has revolutionized the treatment of catyarats.

  • Attention football players: afterschool weight room sessions will begin Wednesday, Feb. 6.
