  • National Hispanic Heritage Month is from Sept. 15 - Oct. 14. So, where did the tradition of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month come from? The foundation for this celebration was laid in 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson initiated Hispanic Heritage Week. The African American Civil Rights movement had just achieved a tremendous success in the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, but the Chicano Rights movement for Mexican-Americans was still fighting for greater recognition. Later, Hispanic Heritage Week was expanded into a month-long celebration under President Ronald Reagan in 1988. In that year, Hispanic Heritage Month was formally adopted into US law as a national period of celebration.
