Learn how the Career Academies at the ARL and each high school provides students with opportunities to earn college credit, scholarships, and industry certifications, participate in worksite and mentorship experiences, and become creative problem solvers by participating in hands-on project based learning.

MIDTERM REVIEW for current 9th Grade Students:

During the week of January 11th – 15th, 2016, 9th grade teachers will host after school review sessions to help students prepare for midterm exams. Sessions will begin at 2:15 and last until 2:45/3 pm. The schedule for review sessions is as follows:

PRACTICE SAT – Take a full-length Practice SAT (the new SAT test) under realistic testing conditions.  Catalyst Prep is offering the new Practice SAT Test at MRHS.  Proceeds benefit the MRHS PTSA.

JZ’s Pizza Truck is Back this week……

It's a New Year and you might as well try some Brick Oven Pizza this week.  It's too good to pass up! They are unique and delicious.  Cheese, Pepperoni, Buffalo Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Greek, Meatlovers, and Sausage.  Try a new one or one each night :) 

The JZ's Pizza Truck is back and will be serving us January 13th, 14th, and 15th from 2:45 until 7:00 each of those nights.  Please consider ordering a pizza or more as it will support our very own girls' lacrosse program throughout the spring and it is our only major fundraiser!  SPECIAL DEAL: Order 3 pizzas for $50 and receive a set of 4 free Coca-Cola glasses while supplies last.

LEADERSHIP U:  Is your student looking for leadership opportunities? Does he or she want to make a difference?  Consider joining the Leadership U Class of 2016!  Leadership U is an exciting leadership, teambuilding and community service opportunity for current high school sophomores.  This four-month program involves a week-long summer program of hands-on activities as well as involvement in a team community service project.

This program is for students with leadership potential, a desire to learn with others, and for those with an interest in the community.  Come to learn more and speak to some of our grads at one of our information sessions:  January 25 at Miller Branch library, February 10 at Central library or March 3 at Miller - all from 7-8 pm.  Parents and students are encouraged to attend.  Applications and information are available in the Guidance Office or at www.leadershiphc.org.  Applications are due March 17, 2016.

After Prom Party:  It is time to start planning for the greatest party of the year, the After Prom Party.  Everyone is invited to attend our first planning meeting on Monday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the staff dining room.  Even if you are a freshman or sophomore parent, we encourage you to attend and help so that you will be "in-the-know" when your students are ready to go to the prom.  This event is sponsored by the PTSA.  Contact Jane Jones at janejones10306@yahoo.com with questions.

STREET SMARTS OF MARYLAND, DRIVER EDUCATION AT MARRIOTTS RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

 Next Class runs from 1/12/16 - 1/29/16. (Limited Seats Available!)

Street Smarts of Maryland provides their students with several course options with their goal of making each student a safer driver in all types of roadway conditions. Their curriculum is defensive driving based and many of their instructors are either retired law enforcement officers or school teachers. Because of their law enforcement background, Street Smarts has also been featured in the Baltimore Sun! The Marriotts Ridge Boosters will receive a tuition referral for each student that enrolls in the program. Classes are held at MRHS directly after school from 3:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. If your child needs drivers education, please support the Boosters and enroll your child in one of these afternoon sessions at the school.

Teens Ask and Experts Answer on January 26! HC DrugFree is proud to partner with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to encourage Howard County teens to submit their drug or alcohol questions as part of NIDA’s 2016 Drugs and Alcohol Chat Day. NIDA’s expert scientists will be available to answer teens’ questions on Tuesday, January 26 between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. All Howard County teens may login at www.nidachat.org and use Howard County’s access code f2f58. This access code number will be required for each student to log into the chat, create a user name, and submit questions to NIDA’s panel of experts. HC DrugFree Teen Advisory Council Meetings: HC DrugFree’s Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. SAVE YOUR STUFF!!!!!

Are you purging before and after the holidays? We know Goodwill is close by, but the Music Department is hoping you will save your unwanted items for our Annual Mustang Flea Market on February 27!

As you collect items, please set them aside for us! We will be collecting bagged and boxed items (and more!) on February 13 and 20.  Large items (such as furniture and sporting goods) may be dropped off on February 26.  No sofas accepted.

HCPSS has developed a brief training module and certificate of completion for anyone that volunteers at Marriotts Ridge or any other Howard County Public School.   Both the module and certificate are located on the HCPSS website, and we’ll also create links from your schools to this page under the “Get Involved” navigation tag. Parents/volunteers please  complete the training and submit your certificate of completion to the school before registering as a volunteer.
