Application for Student Member of the Board of Education Eligible students must be reularly enrolled as a sophomore or junior in the HCPSS and must be academically eligible.  The student who is elected by HCPSS students will serve a one-year term on the Howard County Board of Education, 7/1-2019 to 6-30-2020.  More information and application process is available here. 

 

The GT Summer Institutes for Talent Development will begin registration for summer enrichment classes on February 1, 2019. Classes will begin on July 1, 2019. It is strongly encouraged that interested parents register their children early, as these offerings do fill up quickly.  Complete information is available on the HCPSS website.

 

G/T Advisory Seeks Nominations for Educator Recognition Now through February 15, 2019, advanced-level learners and/or their families are invited to recognize a G/T Resource Teacher, content or classroom teacher, or administrator who has enriched their educational experience.

MRHS Community News

Join BOE Members for Coffee and Conversation on Saturday, January 26, from 9:30-11 a.m. at Swansfield Elementary School.   The public is invited to meet informally with Board of Education members for coffee and conversation on a variety of topics.

Peer Relationships and Substance Abuse Parent Workshop Saturday, January 26 from 9-11:15 a.m. at Oakland Mills Middle School     Please join The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County and HCPSS in a workshop on what parents need to know about peer relationships and substance abuse.  The workshop is part of The Council o Elders’ Community Academy Parent Workshop Series.  Services available during the workshop include child care, limited transportation and interpreting.  Please call 410-313-1598 in advance to arrange services needed.  For more information, go to the ‘Community Academies’ tab at http://thecouncilofelders.org/.

Postponement  “Innocence Stolen” Presentation, scheduled for January 29th at Waverly Elementary School, has been postponed.  Due to the partial shutdown of the Federal Government, all such outreach events have ceased until further notice.  Notification of reschedule will be shared when a new date is determined.

If you enjoy writing, the WJZ Annual Black History Month Oratory Competition is a wonderful opportunity to grow creatively, showcase your skills, participate in Black History Month and win cash!   DEADLINE: January 31

Film-savvy teens are invited to create films for the 15th annual HoCo Student FilmFest.  ENTRY DEADLINE: April 5

Students are invited to design a poster or create a video on the contest theme, We Are All Welcome Here, for the annualChoose Civility Poster & Video Contest.  DEADLINE: March 1

As part of the Women's Hall of Fame induction and to mark Women's History Month, the Commission for Women also sponsors an essay contest for Howard County students in grades 6 thru 12.
