Annual Food Drive Begins 11/7!

The MRHS annual food drive to benefit the Howard County Food Bank begins Thursday, 11/7!

How to Participate

Donate non-perishable food items in first period classes Thursday, 11/7- Tuesday, 11/12.
Donate directly to the Howard County Food Bank onlineLinks to an external site.
Food items will be weighed and monetary donations will be tallied daily.
Students must print their donation receipts, label them with their name and first period teacher's name, and turn them in with the daily food donations; $1 = 1lb. of food.

Incentives 

The top first period class, by weight and dollar amount of food donated, will earn a breakfast provided by the MRHS Culinary Arts program on Wednesday, 11/20 during flex time.
ANY CLASS that donates 300 pounds/dollars will get donuts!

We hope to raise at least $5000 and 3,000 pounds school wide! Online donations are open now and food collection begins on Thursday!

Culinary Club Request

The MRHS Culinary Club is making five trays of Thanksgiving sides for Grassroots in Columbia. They are requesting the items below. Items can be turned into first period classes for the competition. Please place them in a bag clearly marked with Culinary Club!

10 Box/bags instant potatoes

10 Boxed stove top stuffing

10  Boxes Vegetable Stock

20 cans green beans

20 cans sweet potatoes

20 bags miniature marshmallows

20 cans jellied cranberry sauce

Club Announcement Requests

Student club leaders can request weekly school wide announcements in the Student Community. Please read the process carefully to ensure your announcement is posted.

Announcements are automated to send at midnight on Monday mornings.
An email with the announcement, in copy and paste format, is due to Mrs. Rashid at lrashid@hcpss.org by 2:30 PM on Fridays or the last day of the school week.
Students must copy their staff advisor on the announcement request email. Requests without a staff advisor copied will not be posted

Desi Night 11/9

Marriotts Ridge's First EVER Desi Night is approaching quickly!  On Saturday, November 9th from 6-9 PM, MRHS will host five other schools for a night of dancing, food, and fun!  ALL students are welcome, just pre-purchase your ticket using the OSP link below and show up with an ID!

Robotronics Club

Attention all future engineers, tech enthusiasts, and robotics fans. The Robotronics Club is the place to learn to build and code your very own Arduino robot to tackle challenges. Whether you are a coding whiz or a total beginner, we’ve got you covered. Your creations will be put to the test during exciting in-school competitions to win prizes, so if you’re up for the challenge, come be part of the team.

Jason Reynolds at the East Columbia branch

Jason Reynolds is coming to Howard County Library System’s East Columbia Branch on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. 

The event is open to the public and HCLS has two additional opportunities for teens that are interested.

Celebrate Jason Reynolds’ work and express your creativity! Submit art in one of three categories (see below) that addresses the themes found in Jason’s books: e.g., overcoming adversity, personal growth, community.

Entries are judged first at each branch. Each branch winner has the opportunity to meet and take a photo with Jason Reynolds, at the November event. Winners also receive a signed copy of one of his books. All branch winners move onto a final round, where Jason Reynolds selects the overall winners. Winners have their submission signed, then featured on the Library’s social media. All details can be found at the link below.

INTERGIRLS Math Competition

The D.C. chapter of INTEGIRLS is hosting a beginner-friendly, in-person math competition Saturday, December 14th from 9 am - 4 pm at the Bioscience Education Center at Montgomery College Germantown Campus! Our mission at INTEGIRLS is to encourage girls and non-binaries in STEM fields through math competitions and events. This year, we will have math competition rounds (individual and team), an estimathon, a speaker event, awards ceremony, provided lunch, and lots of fun STEM activities. Teams of up to 4 students will be able to connect with and enjoy math with other girls and non-binaries around the DMV. There will be a lot of prizes and fun swag for all participants.

Rainbow Conference Planning

We are looking for students to be on a committee to help plan our Reimagining the Rainbow Conference for Winter/Spring of 2025. If you are a student interested in serving on the committee, please complete this form. You do not need to attend all meetings to participate. A virtual meeting code will be mailed to you to join. 

Rainbow Vision

Calling all creative minds! Rainbow Vision, Howard County’s inclusive literary magazine, is open for submissions from HCPSS middle and high school students. The magazine features diverse voices from students of all backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+, education, mental health, religion, culture, family, politics, society, relationships, and adventure. Our magazine theme for this year is “Infinite Possibilities.” Consider submitting your original poetry, short stories, art, music, photography. Selected entries will be published in our sixth volume of Rainbow Vision Literary Magazine. To learn more, and submit, please visit www.hcpsspride.

Young Authors' Contest

The Howard County Literacy Association invites students in grades 9-12 to submit their original poems and/or short stories to the annual writing contest called The Young Authors' Contest. Please see the attached Young Authors’ Contest Guidelines_HOWARD.pdf for information about the rules and guidelines. All entries must have a completed YAC Student Cover Sheet, 2024-25 HOWARD.docx sent as a PDF. Submissions may be emailed to Mrs. Roussillon by December 20, 2024. Contact Mrs. Roussillon with any questions.  All Young Authors’ Contest information can be found on the HCLA website.
