MRHS Speech Team attended the State of Maryland Championship at Loyola Blakefield on April 6. They won 3rd Place in the Speech Team Sweepstakes and proudly display their trophy in the Speech & Debate showcase located in the hallway leading into the Commons. Other results from the tournament are:

Over $500 donated for Grassroots! During Mustang Time this week, our very own Mr. Vandenberge took NOT JUST ONE, BUT THREE pies to the face (thanks to Tori’s great aim!) for a great cause . . . counseling services at Grassroots. The Active Minds Club Math Department, and the Horizon Council want to give a special shout out to Mr. Vandenberge for being a great sport and Mr. Gnagey’s period 6 class for raising the most money.

Free Spring Break Meals Program will serve Howard County Children, April 15-18
Youth Police Academy
The Howard County Police Department will be hosting a free, one week overnight Youth Police Academy July 7-12 at the Public Safety Training Center. It is for students between the ages of 15-18 who are interested in a law enforcement career. The Youth Police Academy replicates the actual Howard County Policy Academy. This experience is designed to help styudents explore career and leadership opportunitite and physical training. The Howard County Department of Police, in collaboration with the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education (AAA affiliate), will be hosting the first “Know Your Car” Clinic for new drivers between the ages of 16-18. This program was developed by MRHS SRO, PFC Mike Willingham with the MAFSE to help teen drivers become more familiar with the vehicle they drive. Drivers will pull into a lane and meet with a HoCo Police Officer to complete a checklist that will cover distracted driving, seat belts, driving positions, vehicle blind spots, simple maintenance and fluid identification. This is FREE clinic, and upon completion, student drivers have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win a $50 VISA gift card.

Fourth Circuit Sponsors 2019 High School Essay Contest
The contest is open to all students currently in grades 9 through 12. Essays are limited to 1,000 words and must be submitted by April 15, 2019. Students have the opportunity to win one of three cash prizes: first place, $2,000; second place, $1,500; and third place, $1,000. Winners will be announced in July, and travel will be provided to the court’s Constitution Day event in September 2019.
