All HCPSS school-sponsored and community-sponsored events, including high school athletic practices and games scheduled for this afternoon/evening, January 17, 2019, are CANCELED, due to forecasted weather conditions. Unless the school is otherwise notified, students scheduled for after-school activities will be sent home in the way identified for typical school days (by bus, car, or walking). All childcare programs, sponsored by the Columbia Association and the Department of Recreation & Parks in Howard County public schools, will remain open.

 

Rescheduled:  The MRHS/GHS Transition Night, sponsored by the Special Education Departments, that was going to occur tonight (1/17) at GHS has been postponed due to weather forecast for this evening.  Please make note of the rescheduled date on February 7 at 7PM in the Glenelg HS Media Center.   Hope all can attend!

 

HCPSS Superintendent’s Award at UMBC  Congratulations to Austin Chiang who has been selected to receive this prestigious award offered to a limited number of entering freshmen who have earned academic distinction during their high school careers.  He will receive $12,000 per year for a total of $48,000 over a total of 4 years while attending UMBC.   You make us proud!

                                                       

Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar  Congratulations to Isuru Herath who has been named one of the top 300 young scientists of the 78th annual Regeneron Science Talent Search for his research done at the National Institutes of Health last summer.  His project was titled “Towards the Discovery of Antibiotics from Soil Actinomycetes Using a Resistance-Directed Screening Assay”.   Over 2000 applications were submitted with each evaluated and scored by three Ph.D. level scientists.  Isuru will be awarded $2,000; in addition, MRHS will also receive $2,000 to be designated to further support STEM-related activities.   Good luck to Isuru as his project advances to the next level!  More is information about the Regeneron Science Talent Search is available online at https://www.societyforscience.org/

Student Course Registrations are due January 18.    All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders need to submit their course requests for the 2019-20 school year online through the Synergy Student Portal.  Students need to have 7 courses and 3 alternate courses.  Please refer to the MRHS website for instructions on registering for classes in Synergy.

Mid-Term Exams will be given January 22-25, 2019.  See daily schedules.

Dance Placement Auditions  Students interested in taking Dance level 2 thru Senior Company next year are encouraged to attend the Dance Placement Auditions on January 29 to learn routines to be performed in front of judges on January 31.   Read more….

Applications are now available for the next Student Member of the Board of Education

Calling all Juniors!  Are you interested in building leadership skills and learning about your government?  Come learn about Boys/Girls State, a free one-week leadership and citizen development program sponsored by the American Legion/American Legion Auxiliary.  An information session will be held in Mr. Malt’s room (200) after school on February 8.

Leadership U Class of 2019  Are you a student looking for leadership opportunities?   Do you want to make a difference in our Howard County community?  Consider joining the Leadership U Class of 2019!  Come to learn more and speak to some of our grads at one of our information sessions:  January 31 at Miller Library, February 11 at Central Library or March 7 at Miller Library.  All sessions are from 7-8pm.  Additional information is available at http://www.leadershiphc.org/leadership-u-2/ or email Meg Ignacio   mignacio@leadershiphc.org.   Applications are due March 14, 2019.

Student Contests

If you enjoy writing, the WJZ Annual Black History Month Oratory Competition is a wonderful opportunity to grow creatively, showcase your skills, participate in Black History Month and win cash!  

Film-savvy teens are invited to create films for the 15th annual HoCo Student FilmFest.  

Students are invited to design a poster or create a video on the contest theme, We Are All Welcome Here, for the annual Choose Civility Poster & Video Contest.

As part of the Women's Hall of Fame induction and to mark Women's History Month, the Commission for Women also sponsors an essay contest for Howard County students in grades 6 thru 12. The 2019 Women’s History Month essay contest theme is: "VISIONARY WOMEN: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence” .  Visit the contest website for more information: https://wwwhowardcountymd.gov/CFW

Boosters’ Mustang Madness Silent Auction March 2, 2019  Mark your calendar! You will not want to miss this annual fundraising event to raise money to support all students at MRHS.

 

Join BOE Members for Coffee and Conversation on Saturday, January 26, from 9:30-11 a.m. at Swansfield Elementary School.   The public is invited to meet informally with Board of Education members for coffee and conversation on a variety of topics.

 

Peer Relationships and Substance Abuse Parent Workshop Saturday, January 26 from 9-11:15 a.m. at Oakland Mills Middle School     Please join The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County and HCPSS in a workshop on what parents need to know about peer relationships and substance abuse.  The workshop is part of The Council o Elders’ Community Academy Parent Workshop Series.  Services available during the workshop include child care, limited transportation and interpreting.  Please call 410-313-1598 in advance to arrange services needed.  For more information, go to the ‘Community Academies’ tab at http://thecouncilofelders.org/.

 

Innocence Stolen: Protecting Our Children Online Think about what life would have been like if you faced internet dangers when you were impulsive and your brain was not fully developed. The presentation will be facilitated by Department of Justice Community Engagement Specialist Vincent DiVivo. This session will discuss topics such as protecting internet privacy, online predators, sexting, and other topics that present a risk to our students who have access to the Internet, especially their own devices.  Please mark your calendars to attend “Innocence Stolen,” an adult only event which will take place at Waverly Elementary School on January 29 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
