High School – Parents still make the difference!

Parent Report Card

“Parent involvement is a critical part of a child’s school success, and self-assessment can help parents discover areas where they can improve,” says Charles A. Smith, Ph.D., professor of family studies and human services at Kansas State University.

9 Questions to Ponder:

Connect with your school

  1. Do you attend every parent-teacher conference and almost all school programs?
  2. Do you read the school’s newsletter regularly?
  3. Do you contact teaches if there is a problem and give positive feedback to teachers when things are going well?

Be a role model

  1. Do you encourage good sportsmanship at school athletic events?
  2. Do you encourage your child to do volunteer work at least once a month?
  3. Do you volunteer with your child?

Show you care

  1. Do you take time for your child each day to listen to his or her opinions?
  2. Do you ask questions each evening about what your child is learning in school?
  3. Do you look for ways to enrich your child’s learning (such as visiting museums and libraries with him or her, and attending cultural events together)?

“The most valuable thing you can do is talk with your children about school and what they’ve learned each day.  This sends the message that school is important to you and should be important to them also,” says Charles Smith.
