High School – Parents still make the difference!
Read the ‘SQ3R’ Way
At school and at home, children do a lot of reading. They learn the most when they use an organized reading approach, such as SQ3R. This stands for survey, question, read, restate and review:
- Have your child quickly look over a reading assignment and notice what it’s about. Some clues are headings, pictures and bold type.
- Next, he should think of questions about the material. For example: Who is the main character? When did the story take place?
- See if your child can find answers to his questions by reading the assignment. He cantake notes as he goes.
- Now have her summarize what she read. Ask her questions to jog her memory about the material.
- The last step is to look over the assignment again. This can be done right away as well as days later.
