Strutting with the Staff – This evening our very own Dr. Kaufman, Ms. Senisi, Mr. Flynn, Ms. Ryal, Mr. Romash, Mr. Beall, Ms. Gaieski and Ms. Valdesuso will be performing a dance routine and competing against staff from other Howard County High Schools. This event will be held this evening, Thursday, February 11th at Centennial High School beginning at 7:00 pm. Come out this evening to support the MRHS Staff as they perform while supporting a great cause. Boosters is currently looking for board and committee members for the 2016-17 year. Volunteer positions are available for many of our fundraising projects and no experience is necessary. One of our key executive committee positions to fill will be Treasurer. If you are knowledgeable with Quickbooks and excel and like to get volunteer work done on your own time, this may be a position for you to consider. The JZ's Pizza Truck will be back next week: February 17th, 18th, and 19th from 2:45 until 7:00pm. They are unique and delicious. Cheese, Pepperoni, Buffalo Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Greek, Meatlovers, and Sausage. Try a new one or one each night :) Please consider ordering a pizza or more as it will support our very own girls' lacrosse program throughout the spring and it is our only major fundraiser!

Leadership U: Is your student looking for leadership opportunities? Does he or she want to make a difference? Consider joining the Leadership U Class of 2016! Leadership U is an exciting leadership, teambuilding, and community service opportunity forcurrent high school sophomores. This four-month program involves a week-long summer program of hands-on activities, as well as involvement in a team community service project.
This program is for students with leadership potential, a desire to learn with others, and for those with an interest in the community. Come to learn more and speak to some of our grads at our FINAL information session: March 3 – Miller Branch Library from 7-8pm. Parents and students are encouraged to attend. Applications and information are available in the Guidance Office or at www.leadershiphc.org.

Information regarding the 2016 AP Exam Registration and Fee Waiver Application is located on the Naviance Home Connections page. Registration is not complete until a signed copy of the registration survey and payment is received in Student Services.
Deadlines: March 15 to avoid late fees
March 16 - April 1 - $20 late fee per registration
(Note: no registrations will be processed during Spring Break, March 25 - April 1)
April 2 - April 15 - $55 late fee per registration

This Friday, February 12th, the Girls Basketball Program is hosting their annualRed Out Game in order to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association. The evening will be filled with fundraising activities such as a bake sale, a raffle, red out t-shirt sales at the door, and a knockout competition during halftime of both the JV and Varsity games. All proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association. Please come dressed in red as we hope to have a complete 'Red Out' at both games. The JV girls play at 5:15 and the Varsity girls tip off at 7pm at MRHS. Thanks so much for supporting our program and this great cause! -Coach Bay

Want to Make a Difference in Haiti this Summer?
High-school students, college students and professionals from Howard County and beyond — join us for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Haiti this summer (July 6-15, 2016)! As part of the Columbia, MD-based Build Haiti Foundation's (BHF) Global Leadership Program, you will experience Haitian culture, participate in interactive community leadership activities with Haitian students, and work directly with native Haitians on strategies for addressing alternative energy, waste management, preventive medicine, vocational training and business initatives. You will also visit a health clinic, tour the city of Cap-Haitien and the capital of Port-au-Prince to learn about the urban challenges Haitian people face, organize a soccer tournament with local youth, enjoy scenic beaches and the historic UNESCO mountaintop Citadelle, visit local markets and restaurants; and listen to Creole music. The program cost is $2,954 for flights, local transportation, lodging, food, insurance and tourist fees. ravel is open to all high school and college students in Howard County and neighboring areas. Film-Savvy Teens Win $100 by Winning the HC DrugFree Category at HoCo FilmFest: HC DrugFree is looking for film-savvy teens to enter the HC DrugFree Category in the 2016 HoCo FilmFest. The winning film will be used as a public service announcement throughout Howard County. Entries must focus on prescription pain medication (opioids) misuse, which often leads to heroin use. On Wednesday, March 2nd, the Howard County Office of Consumer Affairs and Consumer Advisory Board will host a Student Loan Forum and Resources Fair, “Know Before You Owe!”. The purpose is to help prospective students and families make informed decisions on how to: finance higher education, determine manageable debt loads, shop for student loans and avoid consumer scams surrounding higher education. Our speakers include representatives from Howard County Consumer Affairs, HCPSS, Howard Community College, US Department of Education, the MD Attorney General’s Office, and the Consumer Finance Protection Board.

Format: We will host a forum with multiple speakers from education and consumer protection organizations, followed by a reception with light refreshment. The fair will offer resources from a variety of exhibitors.

ACT MOCK TEST
In an attempt to give our students some exposure to both national college admission examinations an ACT mock test will be administered. The ACT mock test is designed to give the students who plan on taking the April or June official ACT some exposure to the test. It also will give the students who have no knowledge of the ACT a glimpse of what the test has to offer. The mock test is scheduled for Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at Wilde Lake High School. The fee for the mock test will be $10 (cash). The test is open to the first 100 students who register.

Safe Driving Presentation – as part of the HCPSS procedures, all students who plan to drive to school and at least one parent/guardian MUST ATTEND a mandatory safe driving presentation. This mandatory meeting must be attended each school year. Students will receive a parking permit once both the student and parent/guardian attend a safe driving presentation and the application process is complete. The next safe driving presentation will be held on March 3 at 6:30 pm at Howard High School.
Senior Speaker Auditions
Graduation activities speech audition information will be shared in English classes in January. All interested students are encouraged to submit a speech to the media center by 7:25 AM on February 12th. Further information can be found on the school website or by contacting Mrs. Rashid in the media center or via email.
The MRHS Boosters Club will host the annual Mustang Madness Event on March 12 at Players Bar and Grill. Come join other parents for a night of fun and fundraising. There will be dinner, live music, raffles, prizes and a silent auction. The ticket price is $45 online at mrhs-boosters.com through March 10 and then will be $50 at the door. Donations for the silent auction will be accepted until March 1. Spring Sports Season
The Spring Sports season will begin Tuesday, March 1st. The following information will be helpful for any student who plans to try out for Girls and Boys Lacrosse, Outdoor Track, Baseball, Softball, Tennis and Allied Softball. Allied Softball tryouts will begin later than March 1st. That date still has not been determined.
Students must be academically eligible. They must have a 2.0 GPA with no more than one failing grade for the second marking period.
All Students must be insured.
They must have the following documents on file on March 1st.
Current Physical dated after 4/1/2015 A physical is needed yearly.
Copy of Birth Certificate- if they have tried out before, this document is already on file.
Proof of Residency- every sports season. BGE bill is best.
Athletic Participation- needed each sports season
Concussion Testing- once taken, this is good for 2 years.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest- once a year
All forms can be taken from the MRHS website. They should be turned into the coach prior to tryouts.
Concussion testing for spring sports will be given in the Media Center Computer Lab by our trainers, Phyllis Sanders and Carly Hayes, at 3:30 and 4:30 on the following dates:
2/22 Boys Lacrosse
2/23 Girls Lacrosse
2/29 Track (Pole Vaulters Only) and any Make Ups
Track (except Pole Vaulters) and Tennis Athletes do not need to be tested.
Session will begin on time. Lateness will exclude you from the session.
Spring Sportsmanship night will be held on Thursday, March 10th at 7pm. One parent or guardian is expected to attend. Students do not need to attend.

Student Member of the HC Board of Ed Applications
Howard County Public Schools is now accepting applications for the next Student Member of the Howard County Board of Education. Any current sophomore or junior in Howard County may apply for this position. The student must be regularly enrolled in an HCPSS high school, academically eligible, and a junior or senior in the 2016-2017 school year. The student elected by the students of Howard County will serve a one‑year term on the Howard County Board of Education, July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Howard County STEM Fair & Festival
The Howard County STEM Fair & Festival is an annual exhibition of projects developed by secondary school students interested in research. This year’s event reflects the same format as last year, to include both a judged fair portion (8:30 am - 12:30 pm) as well as a community festival of STEM. Parent Volunteers – PLEASE READ
HCPSS has developed a brief training module and certificate of completion for anyone that volunteers at Marriotts Ridge or any other Howard County Public School. Both the module and certificate are located on the HCPSS website, and we’ll also create links from your schools to this page under the “Get Involved” navigation tag. Parents/volunteers please complete the training and submit your certificate of completion to the school before registering as a volunteer.
