Parent/Teacher Conferences – February 4th and 5th
The year HCPSS will be using the Synergy Conference Management to schedule parent teacher conferences; this is a change from Pick A Time. Synergy Conference Management provides a simple user interface and easy navigation. Starting today, Monday, February 1st, Marriotts Ridge High School parents can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select from the time slots provided by the teachers for their conferences. Additional step-by-step information instructions are attached to this email for your convenience.
Safe Driving Presentation – as part of the HCPSS procedures, all students who plan to drive to school and at least one parent/guardian MUST ATTEND a mandatory safe driving presentation. This mandatory meeting must be attended each school year. Students will receive a parking permit once both the student and parent/guardian attend a safe driving presentation and the application process is complete. The next safe driving presentation will be held on March 3 at 6:30 pm at Howard High School.
Senior Speaker Auditions
Graduation activities speech audition information will be shared in English classes before January 15th. All interested students are encouraged to submit a speech to the media center by 7:25 AM on February 12th. Further information can be found on the school website or by contacting Mrs. Rashid in the media center or via email.
The MRHS Music Department is hosting the Navy Band for a concert this Thursday, Feb 4th at 7pm. Selected MRHS Students will be performing with the Navy Band. The concert is free and open to the public and no tickets are required.
The MRHS Boosters Club will host the annual Mustang Madness Event on March 12 at Players Bar and Grill. Come join other parents for a night of fun and fundraising. There will be dinner, live music, raffles, prizes and a silent auction. The ticket price is $45 online at mrhs-boosters.com through March 10 and then will be $50 at the door. Donations for the silent auction will be accepted until March 1. HS STUDY SKILLS CLASS RESCHEDULED TO FEB. 10
Registration has been reopened for the High School Study Skills class originally scheduled to start January 27. It has now been rescheduled to start on February 10, meeting on the17th, 23rd and 24th at Centenninal HS. The basic fee is just $165.00 including the textbook. A payment plan available at no extra cost. All those who registered previously need not re-register.
Subjects include · How to Study More Effectively ·Time Management *Overcoming Procrastination ·Test-taking Skills ·Focusing, Concentrating and Getting Organized·Taming ADD ·Dealing with Boredom and Overwhelm ·Effective Self Advocacy, and more. Great for students who have never learned how to study and those who are creative thinkers whether they are gifted learners or struggling students.
Remember, study skills are not part of the curriculum of HCPSS. Our students have shown improved learning, testing, and self-confidence throughout the 12 years of our program.

Leadership U: Is your student looking for leadership opportunities? Does he or she want to make a difference? Consider joining the Leadership U Class of 2016! Leadership U is an exciting leadership, teambuilding, and community service opportunity for current high school sophomores. This four-month program involves a week-long summer program of hands-on activities, as well as involvement in a team community service project.
This program is for students with leadership potential, a desire to learn with others, and for those with an interest in the community. Come to learn more and speak to some of our grads at one of our information sessions: February 10 – Central Branch Library; or March 3 – Miller Branch Library (all dates from 7-8 pm). Parents and students are encouraged to attend. Applications and information are available in the Guidance Office or at www.leadershiphc.org.
Applications are due March 17, 2016.
Spring Sports Season
The Spring Sports season will begin Tuesday, March 1st. The following information will be helpful for any student who plans to try out for Girls and Boys Lacrosse, Outdoor Track, Baseball, Softball, Tennis and Allied Softball. Allied Softball tryouts will begin later than March 1st. That date still has not been determined.
Students must be academically eligible. They must have a 2.0 GPA with no more than one failing grade for the second marking period.
All Students must be insured.
They must have the following documents on file on March 1st.
Current Physical dated after 4/1/2015 A physical is needed yearly.
Copy of Birth Certificate- if they have tried out before, this document is already on file.
Proof of Residency- every sports season. BGE bill is best.
Athletic Participation- needed each sports season
Concussion Testing- once taken, this is good for 2 years.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest- once a year
All forms can be taken from the MRHS website. They should be turned into the coach prior to tryouts.
Concussion testing for spring sports will be given in the Media Center Computer Lab by our trainers, Phyllis Sanders and Carly Hayes, at 3:30 and 4:30 on the following dates:
2/22 Boys Lacrosse
2/23 Girls Lacrosse
2/29 Track (Pole Vaulters Only) and any Make Ups
Track (except Pole Vaulters) and Tennis Athletes do not need to be tested.
Session will begin on time. Lateness will exclude you from the session.
Spring Sportsmanship night will be held on Thursday, March 10th at 7pm. One parent or guardian is expected to attend. Students do not need to attend.

High School Talent needed! Marriotts Ridge High School's version of America's Got Talent needs you! Class Acts will take place this year on Thursday February 18th from 7 - 9:30 pm in the auditorium. In the past this classic MRHS event has taken place in May but is being moved to February due to academic demands on students and staff during the spring. Student Member of the HC Board of Ed Applications
Howard County Public Schools is now accepting applications for the next Student Member of the Howard County Board of Education. Any current sophomore or junior in Howard County may apply for this position. The student must be regularly enrolled in an HCPSS high school, academically eligible, and a junior or senior in the 2016-2017 school year. The student elected by the students of Howard County will serve a one‑year term on the Howard County Board of Education, July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Howard County STEM Fair & Festival
The Howard County STEM Fair & Festival is an annual exhibition of projects developed by secondary school students interested in research. This year’s event reflects the same format as last year, to include both a judged fair portion (8:30 am - 12:30 pm) as well as a community festival of STEM. PRACTICE SAT – Rescheduled
Take a full-length Practice SAT under realistic testing conditions. Catalyst Prep is offering a Practice SAT Test at MRHS. Proceeds benefit the MRHS PTSA.

HC DrugFree Teen Advisory Council Meetings: HC DrugFree’s Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. Parents/volunteers please complete the training and submit your certificate of completion to the school before registering as a volunteer.
